Kate Spade to Self-Launch New Fragrance

In the second example of a fashion house taking its fragrance business in-house, Kate Spade will self-launch its next fragrance, Live Colorfully, in April.

“We’re creative control freaks,” said Deborah Lloyd, president and creative director for Kate Spade New York, of the decision to go its own way on this project. “We know our girl so intimately, it felt natural to do it our way from start to finish. We felt if we had the hands-on involvement, it would drive the creativity of the project. And it’s an amazing exclamation point to our 20th anniversary. darlings, I had the incredible experience of being on the red carpet for the first time ever this Sunday as a guest of L’Oreal Paris. it’s hard to explain the experience—to be out-numbered by celebrities (oh, hey, Bradley Cooper! oh, hi, cast of Glee!) was definitely surreal. the main thing I learned, really, is that stars are just like us—except perfectly coiffed and maintained. ^_^

my favorite beauty trends on the red carpet—surprisingly, since I’m the most low-maintenance hair girl ever—were the lovely, lovely waves spotted in abundance (I may have tried this look myself: exhibit A). I love that the waves are deliberate, a departure from from the beachy-boho tousled looks popular in seasons past. I can say from first hair experience that the key to maintaining this look is hairspray, by the way. a lot of it.

Recently I read an article (here) about that tug of war game us women play, between being a “feminist” and a “princess”, and it got me thinking. The article focused mostly on who’s paying the bill at the end of a date, but I think there are way more instances we can talk about when it comes to this subject matter..careerwise, for starters.

I would like to say I’m definitely a member of both categories. No, I do not think men should get paid more to do the same damn job as us, but I also really love the color pink, receiving flowers, and lace dresses, but so what?

Besides the article, some of this thinking stemmed from a recent conversation with a friend, we’ll call him Charlie. Charlie and I have been friends for a good amount of time, and he knows quite a bit about what I’m here doing in New York City. Recently, we got into a conversation about post-college plans. To my amazement, he was unaware that I would actually want to stay in New York after graduation. I mean HELLO! I moved here and started working for a reason, and that was to stay (sorry Mom and Dad) and make a career of it. Maybe, I’m overreacting to the situation, but it blows my mind that anyone would ever think that one comes to this city with the intentions of leaving. I mean, c’mon people, I’ve been living in Manhattan, I’ve drank the kool-aid.

But back to the whole feminist vs. princess dilemma. Starting back at the age of five, we were asked what we were going to be when we grew up. My kindergarten teacher didn’t go around the circle and only ask the boys what career they’d want, while asking the girls what carat size they dreamed of (not that any five year old wouldn’t assume you meant carrot). Back then, we were created as equals, so why should that change?

Trust me, I want a nice home with a family for the future, but I want to be able to have that after I’ve accomplished what I want to be when I grow up. Now, speaking from the princess side of things, after my long day at work, you can pay for dinner.

Outfit of the Day: First Day at Vogue

As I’ve learned over time, no matter where you’re working, your clothing still needs to be comfortable to get you through the day. I’m not saying wear your pajamas, but being able to breathe and walk, is a definite necessity with a nine hour work day.

Today was my first day at Vogue and I wanted to wear something that I could look professional enough in, but would allow me to comfortably do whatever task I was asked to do to. While it is true that Vogue centers around fashion, ultimately I’m there to work, not walk the runway. I decided wearing flats would probably be the best option, because I’ve done the first day I’m going to wear heels thing, and I was not about to recreate that bloody nightmare.

With a classic pair of black denim jeans, and my jewel-necked top layered over a classic white blouse, I kept my accessories simple and added a jeweled cuff to the ensemble. It’s always important to keep a few things with you while on the job, and my new Marc by Marc Jacobs iPhone case is a perfect accessory when I need to run a quick errand. It not only holds my phone (which gets me through most of the day) but has a built in card slot, where I can put any IDs or credit cards, and of course my MetroCard. So, with a quick spritz of Chloe perfume, I was ready to start on my latest venture.
